Most of these I tried out in-store or at a gym, plus I also review a couple of popular online-only models that have good ratings from their buyers.

A quick word on budget power racks

The best power racks, half racks, & squat stands are made of the strongest materials and are built like tanks — and often cost way over a thousand dollars.

Well, this article isn’t about any of those top-of-the-line models.

This is about having limited funds to spend on home gym equipment and still finding a decent, durable budget power rack that’ll have more than enough weight capacity to handle all your lifts.

You can definitely take your strength training up a notch in your own garage gym when you’re doing your weight lifting in a squat cage or power rack made of solid steel with solid steel safety bars to go with it.

Slide your weight bench in there & you can go heavy without having to flag down an experienced spotter at the local gym a few miles away.

And most of the models in this article have a decent pull up bar up top too.

Every product featured in this “cheap power rack” review has owner satisfaction ratings that are above average for this product category, which besides the budget power racks also includes cheap squat racks, squat cages, squat stands, & the half rack.

Below are the racks we’ll be looking at, sorted by category.

Article Notes

Rogue Fitness –  All of the Rogue product links go to the Rogue Fitness website, since Rogue does not sell any of their great powerlifting equipment — racks, barbells, weight plates, etc. — on Amazon. (They only list a couple of small accessories on AMZ.)

Ethos Rack & Fitness Gear Half Rack –  Both of these racks are only available at Dick’s Sporting Goods, online & in-store, so their product links in this article go to Dick’s website.

They also offer curbside pickup at their stores when you order online, if you have one in your neighborhood.

Best Cheap Power Rack Reviews

Best Cheap Power Rack - heydayDo.com article image

In this section I’ll go into more detail on qualities & key features on each of the 8 budget power racks & stands in this article, and pass along some owner feedback as well.

The % numbers you see below are my satisfaction ratings showing the percent of owners who gave their rack 5 & 4-star reviews.

Over 80% is above average, over 90% is very good, 100% is really rare and means the manufacturer built a great piece of fitness equipment.

Personal opinion moment: My top cheap power racks among this bunch are the models from Rogue & Rep Fitness, as well as Fitness Reality’s 810XLT.

Best cheap power rack – Top Pick

Rogue Fitness R-3 Power Rack Review

Owner satisfaction rating 100%  4.9  200+ online reviews

My Note: I got to use this (& the SML-2 reviewed later) at a CrossFit® box that’s in the next town over from mine. It’s not wide or deep like a big power rack you’d see at bodybuilding gyms, but it’s very well built & very sturdy.

From the kings of CrossFit® equipment comes another power rack with a perfect rating from all of its owners.

Built with heavy-duty 11-gauge solid steel here in the U.S. of A, it comes in two heights: 90″ or the “Shorty” at 84″.

They come with a fat pull up bar & a skinny pull up bar, both of which you can reposition to your liking.

Rogue R-3 Power Rack - heydayDo image

Power rack features that I like

Excellent owner satisfaction rating –  100%, can’t get any better than that.

Lifetime warranty – on all structural welding & framing.

Made in Columbus, Ohio.

2″ x 3″ 11-gauge solid steel uprights & laser-cut 5/8″ holes. This makes it compatible with the many add-on accessories Rogue offers, including their Infinity products.

Nice Westside Barbell hole spacing design: 1″ through the benching zone, then 2″ above & below that.

Very compact power rack footprint of just 53″ x 34″.

Comes with 2 J-Cups , 2 spotter pipes,  & 4 band pegs/pins.

Has 2 pull up bars, fat (2″) and skinny (1.25″).

Any issues?

* No number markings for the holes.

* Bolting this power rack to the floor was not the easiest thing to do, per a few owners.

* 24″ interior depth may seem a little tight for some, more so if you slide in your weight bench.

* Note the taller power rack of the two versions is 7 1/2 feet high if you have a low ceiling to contend with.

Some Tech Specs

  • Dimensions: 90″H x 54″W x 30″D
  • Depth: 24″ interior depth
  • Weight capacity: 1000 lb.
  • R-3 weight: 200 lb.
  • Floor mounted: It’s designed to be bolted to the floor.

Rep Fitness PR-1100 Power Rack Review

Owner satisfaction rating 91%  4.7   300+ online reviews

Bottom line: The PR-1100 is a well-built, solid steel power rack with 700 lb. weight capacity (400 lb. on the pull up bars) & a 2-year warranty…plus the PR-1100 has only a few dissatisfied owners.

My son the athlete & I checked out the PR-1100 & its junior model the  PR-1000 at Rep’s showroom, when I visited him up in Denver.

Both power racks get four thumbs up from us. 😉

Rep Fitness PR-1100 Power Rack

Best cheap power rack for the money

Fitness Reality 810XLT Power Cage Review

Owner satisfaction rating 95%  4.7⭐   11,000+ reviews

Bottom line: Fantastic weight lifting equipment value if you can get it for somewhere near its normal price, which is around $250 or so.

Fitness Reality 810XLT Power Cage

I tried it, I liked it

The closest Walmart Supercenter used to have this power rack model set up in their sports & fitness section, so I’ve messed around with this 810 XLT a bunch.

I couldn’t do any barbell lifting with it, but I was able to check it out otherwise and think it’s a very good deal for a home gym lifter who’s neither strong as a moose nor a brand loyalist.

Nice budget power rack for a start up home gym, this 810 XLT has over eleven thousand buyer reviews and an excellent owners’ rating of 95% 5- & 4-stars.

Random factoid: The Fitness Reality brand name took over the Ironman brand for certain pieces of home gym equipment, and this power rack is one of them (this used to be known as the Ironman 810XLT).

Both the Ironman & Fitness Reality brands have the same parent company, Paradigm Health & Wellness.

What I like

High owner satisfaction rating of 95%

It has an 800 lb. weight capacity and full-length solid steel safety bars

Multi-position pull up/chin up bar

All barbell lifts good to go – The 810XLT can easily handle all Olympic barbell lifts & any compound movement strength training program.

Good for a low ceiling – the XLT is only about 7 feet high.

Sturdy with minimal to no wobble if tightened correctly when assembling.

Assembly is pretty easy – thanks to clear instructions & well-organized parts in packaging.

Note this 810 XLT doesn’t have the add-on lat pull attachment like its big brother (reviewed later). That’s no problem, because I think that accessory is poorly designed & a pain anyways…

Any issues?

* Minor quibble – While you can use the supplied safety catches as well as those built onto the safety bars to rest your barbell, I wished it came with a pair of J-hooks/J-cups. You have to buy those separately.

* No peg to store a weight plate or four.

* The hardware supplied to fasten everything together is not grade-A; use your own tools instead.

Some Tech Specs

  • Warranty: OK not great, 1-year limited.
  • Weight Capacity: 800 lb.
  • Dimensions: 50.5”L x 46.5”W x 83.5”H
  • Weight:  around 140 lb. or so
  • A pair of safety catches supplied, and there are catches on the safety bars.
  • 2” x 2” tubular steel frame with two rear stability crossbars. Guessing the frame uses 14-gauge steel.

Ethos Power Rack 1.0 Review

Owner satisfaction rating 91%  4.6⭐   200+ reviews

Reminder: This power rack is only available at Dick’s Sporting Goods –either online or in-store.

Bottom line: After spending some quality time with an Ethos Power Rack floor model, my opinion is that this model is best-suited for beginning lifters or those who aren’t going to go real heavy (say, no lifts above 350 lb. or so).

Ethos Power Rack -heydayDo image2

What I like

Very good owner satisfaction rating –  at 92%

Numbered holes on the uprights.

Comes with spotter arms, solid steel safety bars, J-hooks, & a monkey bar – all that’s worth a few bucks.

7 feet tall – good if you have a low ceiling.

Any issues?

* 2″ hole spacing through the bench zone isn’t industry standard.

* Assembly takes a couple of hours.

* No plate storage pegs.

* No add-on accessories available (lat pulldown, dip bars, etc.).

* I think the highest hole for the J-cups may be too short for guys 6′ 3″+.

Some Tech Specs

Overall Dimensions: 59”D x 58”W x 85″H
Overall Weight: 278 lb.
Weight capacity: not listed anywhere I could find
Monkey Bar Diameter: 1-1/8’’
Fat Bar Diameter: 2’’
J-Hook Dimensions: Height: 8.45” Width: 3” Depth: 3.5”
Safety Catch Dimensions: 20” long x 2” wide x 8.3” tall

Fitness Reality X-Class Power Rack Review

Owner satisfaction rating 90%  4.5⭐   1,000+ reviews

Note: I could not find this in a store, so I don’t have any direct experience with it to share with you…

Fitness Reality X-Class Power Rack

The big brother of the 810XLT we looked at earlier, this has almost double the weight capacity (1500 lb.)…although if you were anywhere near that strong, there’s no way you’d be shopping online for a cheap power rack like this one. 😄

You can order it with a lat pulldown attachment that’ll run you around 200 bucks (as of today’s price anyway).

After reading dozens & dozens of customer reviews & going over its technical specs, I don’t believe it is built or designed as well as the Rogue & Rep power racks.

Nor do I think it’s up to the same quality standard as its (cheaper) junior sibling, the 810XLT I reviewed a little earlier in this article.

Bottom line: It’s the lowest rated power rack among the five I chose for this review for good reasons, but ironically it’s the most expensive one at this time.

So I can’t recommend it given there are superior options available we’ve looked at for less money.

What I like

✅ High capacity with full-length safety bars. Capacity is 1500 lb.

Dip Handles –Comes with a dip bar assembly that’s a set of 2″ x 20″ rubber grip handles. Dip bars weight capacity is 600 lb.

✅ Good depth – The 71 ½” of depth is real nice if you train with a partner/spotter. A weight bench fits in easily too.

✅ Easy build – Assembly manual is easy to follow; even the lat pull accessory isn’t hard to attach properly.

What’s not so good

* Bad design problem – safety bars are difficult to align, which makes using this power rack a slight pain in the butt.

* Poor service – Several reports of poor customer support from Paradigm, the parent company of Fitness Reality.

* Personal quibble of mine: ** – The lat pulldown add-on has no leg hold-downs, which I think is kind of shortsighted.

Some Tech Specs:

  • Weight capacity: 1500 lb. combined
  • Dimensions: 86”(h) x 52”(w) x 71.5”(d)
  • Power rack weight: 256 lb.
  • 2″ x 3″ tubular steel frame construction, likely 14-gauge
  • Olympic: For use with with 7′ Olympic bars

Cheap squat racks, squat stands, & half racks

OK, here’s the other group of equipment I evaluated.

If you’re not familiar with the differences between a power rack & a squat rack, half rack, or squat stand — you will be after seeing these models and comparing them to the power racks we just looked at.

Squat racks come in a variety of designs – think of the different types you’ve seen at commercial gyms.

The models I’ve chosen here are tailor-made for home use: more like half of a squat rack or power rack (hence the name half rack.)

Rogue SML-2 Monster Lite Squat Stand Review

Owner satisfaction rating 99%  4.9⭐   870+ online reviews

My Notes: My experience at that CrossFit® box with this SML-2 was all positive. I thought it had a real solid feel for a simple half rack design, and people there were using it for other exercises in addition to just squatting.

Rogue SML-2 Monster Lite Squat Stand - heydayDo image

This affordable stand is one of Rogue’s best-selling squat stands, and is a space-efficient unit that still boasts 1000 lb. of weight capacity.

As you can see, 99% of its buyer reviews left a 4 or 5 star rating  — but more impressively — 92% of all reviews are 5-star.

“The paint finish scratches easily” is the only repeat complaint I found, tho’ no one minded too much given how solid & sturdy this Monster Lite rack is.

What I like

Excellent owner satisfaction rating –  100%, can’t get any better than that.

Lifetime warranty – on all structural welding & framing.

Made in the USA, in Columbus, OH.

Heavy Duty – frame made with 11-gauge steel.

Small footprint – only needs 49″ x 48″ of floor space.

Precision machining – Laser-cut 5/8″ holes.

Easily customizable with Rogue’s wide range of compatible add-ons.

J-cups – are included and are plastic-lined with high-quality UHMW plastic.

Pull up bar included, choose between skinny/fat combo or a single bar.

Any issues?

* Paint chips easily per a few owners.

* Minor beef: The spotter arm setup is sold separately as an add-on.

Some Tech Specs:

  • SML-2 weight capacity: 1000 lb.
  • Dimensions: 92″H x 49″W x 48″D
  • SML-2 weight: 166 lb.
  • 11-gauge steel: 3″x 3″ uprights, 2″ x 3″ bases

Cap Barbell Power Rack Exercise Stand Review

Owner satisfaction rating 86%  4.4⭐   9,000+ online reviews

Note: This is the other low-priced half rack I could not find in a nearby store post-COVID, so I don’t have any direct experience with it to pass along to you.

Cap Barbell Power Rack Exercise Stand

This is the cheapest model in this Best Cheap Power Rack review by at least a hundred bucks last time I checked, but it’s not the lowest rated: that Fitness Gear piece we just looked at is.

This Cap Barbell stand has over nine thousand satisfied owners — people who couldn’t afford a more expensive rack, or who didn’t have the space for one.

Despite its shortcomings, this really inexpensive CAP exercise stand has done a good job for many workout warriors getting it done at home — just check out some of their pics, videos, & comments on Amazon.

What I like

Above average owner satisfaction rating of 89% – with over 9,000 owner reviews online.

Super cheap power rack (even post-COVID gym equipment price hikes, it’s still under $150).

Good for many types of lifts – benching, shoulder press, squats, pull ups, ring dips, suspension training, toes to bar & leg lifts, front levers.

Shipping free on Amazon

Any issues?

* Some owners are shipped incomplete or incorrect parts.

* Some reports of it being a little wobbly.

* CAP’s supplied tools are no good; use your own for a better build.

* No safety bars if you plan to max out.

Some Tech Specs

  • Weight capacity: 300 lb.
  • Dimensions: 46”D x 50”W x 85”H
  • Steel – Solid steel with 12 & 14 gauge thickness

Fitness Gear Pro Half Rack Review

Owner satisfaction rating 9o%  4.4⭐   300+ online reviews

Until recently this half rack enjoyed consistently satisfied customers and a low price under 300 bucks.

Now I see a list price over $400, and a few factory quality control issues have been reported by buyers.

Hmm…

Fitness Gear Half Rack - heydayDo.com image

I was thinking of yanking it off the review due to the recent poor owner reports.

But I’ll leave it here for now, hoping for a return to better times (& its formerly attractive price).

What I like

Very good owner satisfaction rating at 90%, though that has declined from 94% from a couple of years ago.

Easy-to-read peg hole numbers.

Included spotter arms are decent, but…

What’s not so good

* Factory quality issues popping up now & then – like those spotter arms that arrive poorly-made & don’t work properly.

* Recent price hike as manufacturing issues increased – bad combo right there.

* No add-ons like those that are offered with quality half racks.

Bottom line on the Fitness Gear half rack

Seems that recent events have affected this half rack’s value, and not for the better.

Raising its price to where it’s above the Rep Fitness model & close to the Rogue SML-2 sure doesn’t seem smart, considering this Fitness Gear rack is definitely inferior to both of those models.

I can’t recommend this rack at this time, pending some clear evidence that the factory quality problems have been rectified.

Some Tech Specs:

  • Assembled Dimensions: 51″L  x  66”W  x  85”H
  • Weight capacity: 600 lb.
  • Weight: approximately 170 lb.

Home gym power rack buyer’s guide

Woman squatting in her home gym power rack - heydayDo image

If this is your first time getting your own power rack, I think there are a few things to get squared up before plunking down your hard-earned money.

You may have already dialed all these factors in, but I just wanted share them with you to make sure. 😉

Space

It’s good to have the dimensions of your home gym’s available space handy when shopping for a power rack.

Compare your available space to each power rack you’re reviewing, and consider these kinds of things if they apply to you:

* Allow ample room for not only the power rack itself, but also for plate storage, including the space needed to rack & store plates easily.

* Make sure you have enough ceiling height to use the pull up bar the way you want to.

* Does your weight bench have a space to get wheeled to when you switch to squats?

* Does your power rack need enough depth for a training partner/spotter?

And so on, making sure the power rack you’re looking at will fit in nicely with your home gym training plans.

Add-Ons

Before you spring for your cheap power rack, go over your ideal workouts in your mind.

Determine if there’s anything you want/need with your power rack in the way of attachments or add-on pieces like:

  • dip bars;
  • a lat pulldown machine;
  • a FID* bench;
  • a special type of pull up bar;
  • etc.

*FID – flat, incline, & decline

A power rack may come with accessories

Some manufacturers sell their basic unit with an add-on like these, like Fitness Reality’s X-Class power rack, which comes with a dip bar set.

And some have add-on bundles

Many manufacturers also offer add-ons you can bundle up when you buy your power rack.

The Rep Fitness PR-1100 is sold as a stand-alone power rack but you can add a few different pieces like I mentioned in its review earlier.

Rogue Fitness offers all sorts of similar customizations too.

Benefits of your own power rack

Woman doing overhead press in her home gym power rack - heydayDo image

Here are a few good reasons to feel good about having your own place to lift instead of paying to go to one.

* A power rack at home is ready whenever you are.

* A power rack at home makes it easier to squeeze workouts into a busy schedule.

* A power rack at home is your equipment set up the way you want it.

* A power rack at home is a huge timesaver & pays for itself many times over too.

FAQ

Here are answers to some of the common questions about power racks & squat racks asked by beginners & people new to powerlifting equipment.

What is the main difference between a power rack and a squat rack?

A power rack and a squat rack mainly differ in structure and versatility. The power rack is enclosed, with safety bars on all sides, perfect for a multitude of exercises.

The squat rack on the other hand is open, primarily designed for squats.

Which one is more suitable for a commercial gym, power rack or squat rack?

If we talk about a commercial gym, a power rack tends to be a more suitable choice. Its versatility makes it a one-stop station for many exercises, offering more bang for your buck and space savings.

Can a squat rack be used for exercises other than squats?

Now, while a squat rack is primarily designed for squats, it's not limited to that. You can also use it for exercises like overhead presses and barbell lunges, expanding your workout options.

What features should I look for in a power rack?

When looking for a power rack, focus on its sturdiness, the variety of hole positions, and the ability to hold ample weight. A strong, versatile, and weight-bearing rack can be a fantastic addition to your gym.

Are safety bars essential in a squat rack?

Safety bars are indeed essential in a squat rack. They catch the barbell if you fail a lift, preventing injuries and making your workout much safer.

How does the size of a power rack affect its functionality?

As for the size of a power rack, it does impact its functionality. A larger rack offers more room for movement and additional exercise options. But remember, it will also need more space.

Can a power rack be customized with additional attachments?

Yes, a power rack can be customized with additional attachments. Depending on the brand and model, you can add dip bars, pull-up bars, and weight storage, enhancing your workout experience.

What are the benefits of using a power rack for workouts?

Using a power rack has several benefits. It provides safety, allows a range of exercises, and supports heavy lifting, helping you reach your fitness goals more effectively.

Is a squat rack a good option for a home gym with limited space?

If you have limited space in your home gym, a squat rack can be a great option. It's less bulky than a power rack, freeing up room for other equipment or activities.

Do squat stands require a spotter for heavy lifts?

Lastly, squat stands can indeed require a spotter for heavy lifts. While some come with safety bars, the open design may still pose a risk. Always prioritize safety in your workouts, whether it's through the use of safety bars or having a spotter nearby.
